Our room-by-room detox mini-guide will help you swap out toxic home products with safer, more natural alternatives. We suggest starting with one room this month and then move onto another room the next month. Small changes over time have a large impact. You’ll have your whole home upgraded to all natural status in no time!
The Kitchen
The kitchen is a vital space that certainly deserves our attention as it’s the heartbeat of most homes. From swapping out cookware and shopping organic, there are many simple changes that can make big impact on health. Today we’ll focus on the few that you’ll find you interact with most often: cookware, cleaners and water.
Cookware made from materials such as stainless steel, cast iron, or nontoxic ceramic is truly the very best bet. Traditional non-stick cookware typically contains synthetic plastic coatings like Teflon. Such coatings release harmful PFOAs into food when the coating becomes damage which can wreak havoc on the hormone system.
We love our Williams Sonoma 10 Piece Cookware set. It cleans incredibly well with the Abode Dish Soap too.
Traditional cleaning products contain harmful chemicals that negatively impact the hormone system, immune system and even the nervous system. That’s why it’s important to choose toxin free yet effective, cleaning products when working to detox your home.
doTERRA’s Abode Multipurpose Cleaner is easily a fan favorite. It’s made with powerful, plant-based ingredients like citric acid, saponin and cleaning essential oils. Other natural cleaners for the kitchen are the Abode Dishwasher Pods and Dish Soap, both free from harmful chemicals and also highly effective.
If you took a peak inside what’s in your water, you might be more then shocked. A water filter may be one of the most impactful investments you can make for yourself and the family.
Water distillers are the only water filter that remove radioactive toxins, in addition to heavy metals like arsenic, mercury, lead. They also filter chemicals like medications, pesticides, glyphosate etc.
The Bedroom
If you’re anything like me, you’ll put this one off until the very end. However I encourage you jump in and make the bedroom a priority when looking to detox the home because of we as humans spend so many hours in bed each night.
We’ll kick off the bedroom by talking about the mattress! This one can definitely feel like a big investment but well worth it because we spend literal hours in contact with our mattress each day.
When shopping for an organic mattress, look for bed materials that are free of petroleum-based polyurethane foams, flame retardants, or any other potentially harmful chemicals that will off-gas into your home.
We bought an Avocado mattress when it was finally time to upgrade to a King last year and we love it! The support is just right and I really appreciate that there are no coils inside the mattress, which can be irritating to an EMF sensitive person like myself.
Humidifiers can also level up your bedroom environment. Not only does it moisturize the air and therefore your airways, but it will also keep your skin more hydrated and even boost your immune system. Add essential oils to your humidifier and you get even more immune boosting and even mood balancing benefits. Our favorite oils to add are Lavender and Vetiver for deep sleep support or Breathe blend or Eucalyptus for opening airways and quieting a loud sleeper.
Detox your sleep environment by blocking out ambient light with a quality eye mask. Light exposure can interfere with our body’s natural sleep-wake cycles, making it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep. By wearing an eye mask, you can create a dark and relaxing environment that promotes deep, restful sleep. Evan swears by his eye mask!
The Bathroom
Bathroom products like skin care and body care typically carry a host of chemical ingredients. Choosing natural products is an essential step to detox your home. Our favorite face cleansing product is YarrowPOM Body Serum as it works wonders as an oil cleanser. For a natural daily SPF, we recommend Sun Daily Moisturizer, which can help nourish and protect the face using 100% pure and natural ingredients.
Additionally, switching to toxin-free deodorants like Primally Pure or doTERRA’s Natural Sensitive Deodorant can help keep you feeling fresh without exposing your body to harmful chemicals like aluminum and heavy metals. I’m also a sucker for body balms, especially in the winter months when my skin tends to get dry or chapped. You can try the doTERRA Body Butter (so so good!) in lieu of your typical lotions for truly amazing results and to avoid synthetic chemicals and scents
The Laundry
Transform your laundry room into a toxin-free haven by considering eco-friendly and non-toxic laundry detergent options. Most conventional laundry detergents may contain harmful chemicals, such as phthalates, which can disrupt hormones and have negative health effects. doTERRA sells Laundry Pods that are free from phthalates, parabens, phosphates, dyes, chlorine, ammonia, and they are also packaged without plastic and using post-consumer recycled material. It’s the most toxin-free and environmentally friendly laundry pod on the market.
There’s a little-known fact about fabric softeners and dryer sheets that might surprise you. Despite their name, they don’t actually soften your clothes. Instead, they leave behind a layer of ions on your clothes. These products can contain harmful ingredients like preservatives, colorants, and quaternary ammonium compounds that are known to cause asthma and reproductive health problems.
The simple toxin free swap is just as effective but will save you lots of money because you only need to buy them once: dryer balls. We love to add refreshing essential oil scents to the dryer balls too like Lemongrass, Wild Orange or Peppermint.
